Pilot test

In an evaluation context, a pilot test or a field test is when a data collection tool (e.g., a survey or interview guide) is tested with participants that represent the intended audience. The purpose of a pilot test or field test is to ensure the tool is feasible and understood by the intended audience. Pilot or field testing a tool is more than simple administration; it may include cognitive interviewing, debrief sessions, and think-aloud directions.
