Nominal variable

N

A nominal variable is a type of categorical variable that puts cases into categories that cannot be ranked. An example of a nominal-level variable is hair colour: people could be assigned to blonde, red, brown, etc., but there is no way to rank colours from low to high. When the categories CAN be ranked, it is considered an ordinal variable.
