Independent variable
The independent variable (a.k.a. predictor variable) is the variable we use to try to explain why the dependent variable varies. For example, if patient satisfaction is our dependent variable, a logical independent variable would be treatment type, since the type of treatment a patient receives likely affects their satisfaction.
