The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is used in hypothesis testing, and is the expected outcome if we disprove the null hypothesis. If our question is “Does participation in the exercise program improve fitness?” our hypotheses would be:

Null hypothesis: The exercise program will have no effect on fitness.

Alternative hypothesis: The exercise program will improve fitness.
